Foundation: 13. Juli 1878 (Foundation of Jugoslavia 29 November 1943). Recognition of independence of Montenegro from Serbia on 15 June 2006. After the admission of Montenegro on 28 June 2006 as the 192nd member state of the United Nations (UN) Serbia also formally became an independent state under international law and, for the first time, a landlocked country.
Administrative divisions: 29 districts (provinces), of which 17 in Serbia, 7 in Vojvodina and 5 in Kosovo. Vojvodina autonomous province (with Serbia's new 2006 constitution the autonomy was extended to include financial autonomy). Kosovo: Under UN administration since 1999. Declaration of independence 17 February 2008. Recognized by 89 states, a.o. by the majority of the EU27.
Political system: new constitution on 29 October 2006 accepted by referendum. Parliament (single chamber) 250 members. Elections every four years. Direct election of the head of state every five years (eligible for a second term). Voting age 18.

Head of state: Tomislav Nikolić (independent, before Serbian Progressive Party SNS), since 31 May 2012; winner of the run-off vote against predecessor Boris Tadic (Pro-European Democratic Party DS).
Prime Minister: Ivica Dačić (Serbian Social Party SPS). Confirmed by Parliament 27 July 2012.

EU: The Stabilisation and Association Agreement was initialled on 7 November 2007 and signed in Brussels on 29 April 2008. On 9 September 2008 it was ratified by the Serbian parliament, on 19 January 2011 by the EU-Parliament. 26 of the 27 EU states signed the agreement. On 1 March 2012 Serbia was granted European Union candidate status.
