Vienna University Gynaecological Clinic - Showing the Way Ahead in Europe

A new competence centre at the University Gynaecological Clinic in Vienna's General Hospital (AKH) treats cancer cases using the most modern methods. This is the first such "Centre of Excellence" in Austria and only the fourth in Europe.

From diagnosis to post-operative care
The "Centre of Excellence" at the University Gynaecological Clinic treats patients with gynaecological cancer diseases using the most modern methods. Right from the initial diagnosis to psychological post-operative care the patients are nursed all around the clock. It is the first such centre in Austria, and only the fourth in the whole of Europe, after Freiburg and Nuremberg (Germany) and Louvain (Belgium), that fulfils all the precepts formulated by the European Society for Gynaecological Oncology.

The forward-striding role of the Vienna department, both in clinical practice and research, as well as its status as a central training unit for oncology in Austria and in eastern Europe is thus amply demonstrated.

Training by specialists
"Carcinomas should be treated where not only the correct indication has been reached, but also where the necessary basic conditions can be offered for the best possible treatment", says Univ.-Prof. Dr Sepp Leodolter of the Vienna Gynaecological Clinic. Also relevant is the fact that such centres function as training centres for future specialists.

At present the Gynaecological Clinic treats about 170 patients a year and with its Department for Special Gynaecology disposes of it own competency centre for breast cancer.

10 years of the New General Hospital
The new City of Vienna General Hospital (AKH) this year celebrates its tenth anniversary. As the last department in the old AKH (in Vienna-Alsergrund) which had been opened in 1784 by Emperor Joseph II the University Gynaecological Clinic transferred in March 1996 to the new building. The New AKH, with over 2,200 beds and a staff of about 9,000 - 1,440 of them doctors - is Europe's largest hospital. It houses 27 university clinics. In 2005 alone approximately 46,500 operations were performed.
