It’s movie time!
Vienna’s open-air cinemas invite you to enjoy films under the stars in summer.
Cultural & culinary highlights
Lovers of opera, ballet, classical music and jazz as well as gourmets flock to the Rathausplatz film festival in the summer months. An annual 600,000 visitors come to watch the diverse musical highlights on a 230m2 screen. 2009 is the anniversary year of Joseph Haydn (d. 1809), Georg Friedrich Händel (d. 1759) and Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (b. 1809) and so the programme is partly devoted to them, featuring spectacular productions of their masterworks, such as the memorable performance of Haydn’s oratorio “The Creation” at the Basilica of Saint-Denis. In addition to these cultural delights around 20 top caterers also offer “the best tastes of the world” every day, starting in the late morning.Popular open-air cinemas
Augarten park is one of Vienna’s most idyllic location for open-air cinemas. “Kino wie noch nie” (Cinema like never before) presents 50 films this year, ranging from silent movies accompanied by live music to dance films to a “culinary cinema” special that appeals to all senses. In bad weather the films will be screened at Metro Kino in the city centre. The popular “Kino unter Sternen” (Cinema under the stars) has moved from Augarten to Karlsplatz and focuses on Austrian films this year.

Exceptional locations
Neugebäude castle presents the latest blockbusters in a medieval environment, while “Kino auf dem Dach” (Cinema on the rooftop) is the most unusual and highest place to watch films under the starry sky: comedy is the motto of this year’s programme at the cinema on the roof terrace of Vienna’s Central Library, high above the Gürtel ring road. The nomadic VOLXkino presents 70 Austrian and international films at 16 locations all over Vienna. Those who are looking for an even more unusual location might try Europe’s most modern drive-in cinema: a special summer experience – privacy guaranteed.
