‘vienna podcast’ – the first Vienna Video City Guide is online

Since the end of August, there has been another video website for people to enjoy. ‘vienna podcast’ is the name of the hot new site where you can view all sorts of videos about Vienna – around the clock and also on the move.

Visitors to the site can learn plenty of interesting things about Vienna, from how to use a typical public transport ticket machine to what people used to wear on the city’s streets in the 1950s.

Alongside the videos can be found both information about the institutions and customs concerned, and useful links and location details. Also available is a ‘special interest channel’, with videos organised by theme, which, according to the website’s operators, “unlike YouTube, also checks for quality”. Videos already uploaded include ones about Vienna by night, ‘typical Vienna’, a museum tour and ‘historical Vienna’. The latter was made in collaboration with the Austrian Film Archive.

Shoot it yourself
Although most of the short videos so far are about tourist sights, restaurants and hotels, the website is not only aimed at tourists. Quite apart from the fact that Viennese people might also be interested to know what the interiors of the city’s luxury hotels look like, they also have the chance to upload videos themselves. “From offbeat, modern and witty to traditional and homely – anything goes here,” say the website operators from the Verein zur Förderung audio-visueller Kommunikation im Internet (Association for the promotion of audiovisual communication on the internet).

In addition, there will be a video competition four times a year. The theme of the first competition is outdoor dining areas, and all amateur filmmakers have until 15 November to submit their mini masterpieces. The best three videos will win a prize of € 500.

Vienna in your pocket
The videos on the site can also be accessed on the move, since ‘vienna podcast’ offers the perfect web interface for smartphones. If you want to keep right up-to-date, you also have the chance to subscribe to videos for free with the help of a podcatcher.

The organisation’s declared objective is to extend the Video City Guides project to other cities and regions. “However, we want to concentrate on the Eastern European market because of its strategic location,” say the organisers.

Vienna, a camera and you
For the sixth time now, the Vienna Photo Marathon is taking place this year on 20 September. Physical stamina is less important for participation than imagination and creativity. Things kick off at 9am in Vienna’s Messe Congress Center. What you have to do is to make a photographic record of 24 set themes as quickly and imaginatively as possible and then hand in the results on a film or a memory stick. The winners can look forward to a trip to Prague, Ringfoto vouchers and a host of other prizes.www.foto-marathon.at/
