It’s movie time again!

The international Viennale film festival has been held in Vienna every October since 1960. This year film buffs can look forward to 140 feature films as well as a comprehensive choice of documentaries and short films. The programme offers classic genre films as well as avant-garde works, international auteur cinema and select commercial productions.

Tilda Swinton will open the Viennale on 22 October. One of the two festival tributes is devoted to the Scottish actress; it features films like ‘Michael Clayton’ which earned her an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress alongside George Clooney.

A special programme on ‘The future of cinema’ shows select works from the German Film and Television Academy Berlin. The retrospective ‘The Unquiet American’ at Filmmuseum (from 7 October) presents ‘transgressive comedies’ from the USA. Another focus will be on Austrian cinema.

Exclusively for a young audience
The fifth international film festival for young people, GAFFA, takes place before the Viennale in early October. This year’s motto is ‘Wild stories & strong feelings’. 13 films from Australia, Brazil, Germany, England, Finland, Canada, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland will be shown.
